The latest figures show that the positive trend has continued overall. The financial sector in particular is moving along well, and when it comes to CEOs, Finnish co-operative enterprises appear to be ahead of listed companies.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Data collected in summer 2026 shows that the share of women has grown in every governing body since the first survey year. Women now make up 53 percent of the members of co-operative enterprises&#8217; representative councils in Finland (44% in 2019). Among supervisory board members, 43 percent are women (36%, 2019), among board members 38 percent (29%, 2019), and among board chairs 18 percent are women (13%, 2019).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The biggest leap has been among CEOs: a woman now heads one in five co-operative enterprises in Finland (8%, 2019). That high overall figure is driven largely by the co-operative banking sector, where a woman leads a quarter of all co-operative banks (compared with 8% among listed companies). The most surprising finding is that after co-operative banks, agri co-operatives have the second-highest share of female CEOs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More women leaders still needed<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The positive trend isn&#8217;t uniform across the board, as the table below and a comparison with the 2024 figures show. In agri co-operatives and co-operative banks, the share of women among supervisory board chairs actually fell, and co-operative banks have slightly fewer female CEOs than in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And while the &#8220;rank and file&#8221; of governance bodies is becoming more female, the chair&#8217;s gavel and the CEO&#8217;s seat are still less often held by women. There&#8217;s clearly more work to be done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reaching the goal without quotas<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a review of Women in Leadership published by the Finland Chamber of Commerce in July 2026, the share of women on the boards of listed companies in Finland rose to a new record of 37 percent \u2014 the same figure as for co-operative enterprises combined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among large listed companies the share is already 42 percent. But mutual insurance companies (46%) and co-operative banks (43%) are already ahead of even large listed companies when it comes to women&#8217;s share of board seats. The S Group (33%) trails slightly, and agri co-operatives (19%) trail clearly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rise among listed companies is driven in particular by the new EU directive requiring listed companies&#8217; boards to have balanced representation of both genders by 2026. This is an interesting point of comparison for the co-operative sector: the co-operative financial sector in Finland has reached this goal without any quotas at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the Gender Equality Barometer published by Finland&#8217;s Ministry of Social Affairs and Health in 2025, 89 percent of women and 69 percent of men believe that businesses and the economy would benefit from having more women in leadership positions than at present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a business model built on member democracy and equality, co-operative enterprises can be trendsetters.
